PREFIGURATION

ink and watercolor on paper, 30" x 22", 8.6.2001.

PREFIGURATION is a painting I made in my hometown of New York for my mother's birthday on the sixth of August 2001, scarcely more than a month prior to the destruction of the World Trade Center. At that time I had a vision of the Brooklyn Bridge facing west, looking towards Manhattan. There are no buildings present in the background; only a haze obscures them. Replacing the vehicles that would be seen in the roadway is a traffic of human beings in prostration towards Mecca. The arches of the bridge have always looked decidedly Muslim to me, and a surah from the Koran is emblazoned upon them.
